KREUZBERGED BERLIN

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

ROLLING UP

ROLLING UP

The first Berlin escalator opened on December 22nd, 1925 in an elegant and popular department store in Leipziger Strasse 46-49 corner Dönhoffplatz.

Tietz-Warenhaus invested not only in the new convenience for their customers but also in a professional whose job it was to accompany its users as they took their first, shaky steps onto the novelty piece.

You can see him  the photo below, doing his duty, positioned at the bottom of the steps.

“De eerste rollende trap in Duitschland is in het warenheus Tielz [sic] te **Keulen** in gebruik genomen.”—”Die erste Rolltreppe Deutschlands ist im Warenhaus Tie[t]z in **Köln** [am Rhein] in Betrieb genommen worden.”

Genau. Und nur paar Monate später hat Tietz eine Rolltreppe für sein Berliner Geschäft am Dönhoffplatz bestellt. Am 22 Dezember ging es los.
