Schönhauser Allee traffic in the late 1930s / early 1940s

Today´s photo presents the junction of Schönhauser Allee, Wisbyer Strasse and Bornholmer Strasse (invisible behind the viaduct of the U2 elevated railway line) in Prenzlauer Berg in what must be the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s (the VW Beetle, the small car visible next to the trams, was mass produced since 1938 – the heavy air-raids on Berlin, which turned the city into ruins, began in 1943).
The “Linie 8” tram passing under the viaduct has just crossed the western side of Schönhauser Alle where Bornholmer Strasse ends and is about to enter Wisbyer Strasse on the eastern side of the boulevard.
The U-Bahn train on the viaduct is travelling from U-Bahnhof “Pankow” (today “Vinetastrasse”) towards the station “Schönhauser Allee”, which until February 1st, 1936 was called “Nordring”.
This section of the Hochbahn (elevated city railway) between Prenzlauer Berg and Pankow was opened for service in June 1930 – until then the 1913 line from Spittelmarkt, the Linie A, ended in the middle of Schönhauser Allee.
As for the grand buildings on the eastern side of the boulevard they are, miraculously, still standing but you would hardly be able to recognize them – the war deprived most of them of their roofs and front walls. However, the characteristic, “boxy” gables on top of the house at Number 104 are still as recognizable as ever.
