Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin
For the past two days the whole of Berlin has been enthusing about the latest street traffic project concerning the construction of a new cycling road under the viaduct of the elevated railway line in Kreuzberg and Schöneberg. The idea is the brainchild of a group of cycling enthusiasts who joined forced and established Radbahn Berlin group.
The space underneath and along the original Berlin Hochbahn line – the first section of Berlin´s U-Bahn network opened in February 1902 – which for over a hundred years has been known as the Magistratsregenschirm (the city council or municipal umbrella), would be a perfect place to install the said cycle path.
We can only hope that the city authorities see the immense advantages such an arrangement would have for all the parties involved: the cyclists, the drivers and the pigeons living underneath the U1 tracks. The latter would finally get something interesting to look at.
Here is a very interesting and crisp analysis of the project presented by Dave through his great blog at andBerlin. Please click the image to enter.
