KREUZBERGED BERLIN

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

BERLIN BRUSHES: DOWN THE RIVER WITH HERR JACOB

Blick von der Spree by Julius Jacob Der Jungere (1885)

Blick von der Spree by Julius Jacob Der Jungere (1885)

View over the river Spree between the river and Stralauer Strasse painted by Julius Jacob the Younger in 1886.

On the right side the Rotes Rathaus and Nikolaikirche with its characteristic two spires placed on top of the medieval church in 1878 by Hermann Blankenstein (he added one along the already existing spire, causing a nasty war of opinions among the top Berlin architects and historians of the time).

In the background, the old Berliner Dom – Berlin Cathedral – demolished in 1890s to make space for the new and more representative building that we all know today.
