KREUZBERGED: BERLIN COMPANION

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

YOU ARE HERE: ALEXANDERPLATZ IN 1903

Alexanderplatz in 1903.

Alexanderplatz in 1903 looking down König Strasse towards the square and with Neue König Strasse in the background.

Berlin electric and horse-drawn trams as well as a horse-drawn omnibus at Alexanderplatz in 1903.

The square changed a lot since the day this photo was taken: none of the buildings survived the re-development projects and the subsequent war. The same applies to the Berolina statue: dismantled prior to the construction of the large U-Bahn station “Alexanderplatz” in the late 1920s, it was moved to the other side of the square, only to be removed again and, sadly, melted down in the 1940s.

A lot more attractive than present day Alexanderplatz, I think

It was, wasn´t it? Today´s Alex is, to be honest, one of the most chaotic and confusing places in town. Not because of the human masses but because of the lack of orientation lines as such. Pity they missed them when renovating the plaza. Or failed to make them noticeable.
