KREUZBERGED: BERLIN COMPANION

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

STREETCAR NAMED SENSUCHT

Great news: the new Berlin authorities are planning to reintroduce street-trams to what used to be West Berlin – since the late 1960s trams can only be found in the eastern part of the city.

It would be great to see them rolling up and down Mehringdamm and along Yorckstrasse-Gneisenaustrasse line again.

Here’s an image of the crossing of all of the above streets in the good old days of the street cars.

Found thanks to Peter Hanemann and the Berliner Straßenbahn.

This corner was a real transport hub in those days. From here one could go to Charlottenburg and even Spandau, to the city. to the southern suburbs, to Neukölln and beyond. The U-Bahn too was ready to take you places.

My Marathon run took me across this corner. There were two cinemas nearby and only 100m to “Elahs” Eisdiele.

Peter, do you remember the names of the cinemas and where they were?

One cinema was the “Thalia” in the second building from Gneisenaustrasse. The other one of course was the “York”, just before the church. It is now a whole chain of cinemas, including the “Kant” and the “Delphi”. I have no idea whether the “York” still exists.

The Thalia – was it in Gneisenaustrasse itself or do you mean Mehringdamm?

Thanks, Peter! I will write about Thalia soon – got this fantastic book on the old picture shows in Berlin and cannot wait to share my newly gained knowledge:)

Before it became a cinema it was a theatre by the same name. Thalia is the oddess of performing arts.

Die Eisdiele – was it on the corner of Mehringdamm and Yorckstrasse or at some other place?

It was halfway between York- and Hagelbergerstrasse.

At the corner, there was Cafe Frohberg, which was too posh for our family.

I think you can see it in the picture.

Yes, the Frohberg is there. Today it´s an irritatingly touristy and posh Italian restaurant:-)
