KREUZBERGED BERLIN

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

MEMHARDT-PLAN – BERLIN IN 1652

Here is the oldest city map of Berlin-Cölln from 1652, made by Johann Gregor Memhardt, a military engineer and expert in city fortifications.

Memhardt was appointed the court engineer to the Great Elector, Friedrich Wilhelm from the House of Hohenzollern, and entrusted with the refurbishment of the Electoral Residence as well as with the new planning of the Lustgarten.

However, Memhardt’s most significant work was the planning and partly the construction of the new city fortifications – of the Festung Berlin.

The map made by the engineer features many still well-known addresses in Berlin. Have fun finding your feet in Berlin AD 1652!
