Here is another older post about an event that is worth mentioning again.

On April 14th, 1902 Berlin lived through one of the worst bouts of bad weather and floodings in has experienced so far. They left parts of the city badly damaged but also led to some significant improvements being introduced. One of them was the construction of the so called Northern Embankment. The other was speeding up the works underground – in 1902 Berlin still did not have a proper sewerage system that could have prevented the flood. The one in London designed by Joseph Bazalgette was finished in 1865…
