Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

A Terrible Beauty: Diving Into a 70-Year-Old Photo of the Sea

William Vandivert, an American photo-journalist who worked for the LIFE magazine became famous for his images of Berlin soon after the war´s end. Here is another picture he took on the North Atlantic – the text below tells its story but even without that background its almost paralysing, freezing beauty is obvious to anyone looking. Knowing that at the moment this photo was being taken the waters below were full of German U-Boot ships makes the shivers going down your spine even colder.
A perfect image by an excellent photographer. Enjoy it!
