Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin
Between the 16th of April and the 2nd of May 1945 Berlin became the stage for the final act in the horrid spectacle of WW2.
Whatever was left of this city after the regular air-raids and thefires that followed the bombings was to be damaged, destroyed, gone – Berlin was about to meet the fate that Warsaw, Rotterdam and Coventry met before.
Here is a great text about the final battle and the death of the city – about the horror that was about to end only to turn into a new one – written by Marcel Krüger for Slow Travel Berlin (please, click below).
The footage below is a collection of several films made at the time in Berlin by Russian and German cameramen following their respective troops. Despite it being short and silent, it is overwhelming and powerful in its depiction of the madness of war. Lest we forget and make the same mistakes. And it is easier done than we think.
