Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin
I wish to say thank you to all those who came to witness today´s ceremony – the only funeral that the Jewish family from Hofmanndamm 9 in Kreuzberg: Kurt, Käte and their little son Berl Eisenstädt ever had.
I am also very grateful to all those who wanted to be there but could not join us.
If destroying someone´s name – smashing the tombstone, burning the books, erasing the records so that no trace of one´s existence is left – if all this equals ultimate death then what happened today was a small resurrection.
They are back again:
Kurt Eisenstädt born in 1896, murdered in Auschwitz on March 1st, 1943
Käte Eisenstädt born in 1904 in today´s Czluchow in Pomerania, murdered in Auschwitz on March 2nd, 1943
Berl (Berlin) Eisenstädt born on February 6th, 1941 and murdered in Auschwitz on March 2nd, 1943 – three weeks after his 2nd birthday.
Remember their names.
