Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

oranienstrasse 1966 from berliner strassen rbb film

Another documentary about Berlin found online does what this blog is trying to do for Kreuzberg: showing the past of the city against its present.

From Wedding to Charlottenburg, through Kreuzberg and Tiergarten/Mitte, the camera of RBB – the local TV station for Berlin and Brandenburg – is sliding down the streets that in only 50 years changed often beyond recognition.

After Müllerstrasse and Brunnenstrasse, the film-makers visited Oranienstrasse in SO 36. This is another great opportunity to see what Kreuzberg looked like at its “rawest”,  before the urban development authorities discovered that renovating the old might indeed be better than replacing it with the new. The film also mentions the re-development plans concerning the complete tearing down of Oranienstrasse to make space for the planned motorway junction (more about this chapter in our history here). The motorway junction we were luckily spared.

The film is only available in German.
