KREUZBERGED BERLIN

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

MARATHON PEOPLE

Berlin Marathon is the only event that I know of that makes everybody smile: the stationary fans (while they are watching, happy that it is not them who has to do the running) and those running (after they are done running, happy that they can finally stop).

The reason for this collective exuberance could be the fresh whiff of serotonin and dopamine permeating the air along the marathon route. I for once could not wipe that smile off my face for another 3 hours, which made eating my full English breakfast in Schöneberg (a neighbouring borough) a tad tricky.

In total, this must be by far the cheeriest day in town.

What made me smile particularly wide was the sound we suddenly heard on the corner of Yorck- and Möckernstrasse. For a while unable to guess its source, we came up with some – at times pretty unsavoury –  solutions. However, soon we knew. Elementary, dear Watson… And here is how it went:

And after the marathon…

The Marathon Man is shedding the skin

I concur with you, that is a happy event. I ran it myself, what now appears years ago, but my memory is still fresh. Yesterday we were sitting at Gendarmen Markt and sipping coffee while watching the runners running their last kilometre or so. It was a glorious day and we spent part of it with our visitor from Florida.

Dear Peter, once again thank you for the fantastic time I had with both of you on Friday – on my way back to the bike I was snacking on those red berries in the park and got several guys so curious about them that they tried them as well. I expect the bushes and the tree to be empty by now – I guess we ate them all:)
The marathon is my favourite big event in Berlin. Nothing else compares to it:)

When I told my sister about the fruit she recoiled with shock and horror and told me they are highly toxic. But they are not. The Eibe tree is poisonous but not the fruit. You can check it out on the Wikipedia.

Hey, we are the walking and talking proof that the fruit cannot be poisonous. We are still there, alive and kicking:) And the things are delicious!
