KREUZBERGED BERLIN

Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin

THE INVISIBLE MOTHER

Now and then during my never-ending search for information about Kreuzberg, Berlin and some 5564763 other things I find worthy of spending time learning about, I stumble upon something that makes my otherwise fast moving research brain stop in its tracks and be lost for words. Today it happened again.

I have never heard about the so called “invisible mother” or “hidden mother” before. Those are mothers holding their children or babies for photos (which were usually taken at old photo ateliers) without themselves showing in the picture later. Often they were covered with carpets or blankets or swathed in many metres of black fabric. Here are some of such images found on a brilliant web-page retronaut.co and also recycled from another brilliant page: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1264520@N21/pool/with/6513056915/#photo_6513056915.
