Everything You Never Knew You Wanted to Know About Berlin
Here is a true gem that fell into my lap a couple of days ago – I am so grateful that I was wearing my glasses then for I could have missed the true meaning of this find.
This film was made in 1935 and as you will hear it was used by the Brits in their own cinema newsreel. Berlin is getting ready in case another war should break out (which as we all know it will). Preparedness is everything: the people of German capital are being trained to react in case of a bomb attack or in case chemical weapons were used.
This particular training took place right around the corner: if you look closely, you will recognise them all. Bergmannstrasse, Friesenstrasse, Heimstrasse, Mehringdamm in the background and last but not least, our 120-year-old Markthalle herself seen as a lovely patterned wall next to which the chemicals are being washed off the street.
This find was purely accidental.
